The Mid Fall Open

If anyone ever asks if rebuys are worth it, point them in the direction of Bob Maffeo. 13 players met at the posh Beck Resort and Casino for the third of five qualifying tournaments. It was the largest gathering of the season, and full of excitement and irony. Most of the night, the word at the tables was "tight." But ironically, It only took one hour for the first elimination (Bill H, eliminated by Eric S). And by the first break, at the end of round four, only one rebuy by WCRPL newcomer Bob Maffeo. It looked like desperation, but will ever be known as the rebuy heard 'round the world!

With his replenished stack of chips, Bob went on a tear. Quickly, he eliminated Jeff P. Soon, the field was down to 8 players, and it became clear that another Bob, WCRPL regular Bob Meyer, would be going the distance. The remaining six players were soon eliminated, by one Bob or the other, and heads-up play began, with both Bobs sitting side-by-side. Bob Meyer was up almost 3 to 1 at this point! As the hands were dealt, it became clear that this was still anyone's game. Bob Maffeo skillfully was able to double, then triple up, leaving Bob "Bad Beat" Meyer wondering what happened to his chips! In the end, it was Bob Maffeo that was able to beat Bob Meyer with his A-10.
